CURRICULUM
Reading, Spelling, & Handwriting
We have adopted a new reading program this year that I am very excited to work with. It includes an abundance of resources, activities and hands-on instruction to help your child learn reading and writing skills. Each week's stories incorporate handwriting skills, spelling words, and writing skills as well as developing necessary reading skills. Reading is the main focus of first and second graders, and will be what we work on most during our day. Please read with your child as much as possible at home.
We will be taking spelling tests every Friday morning. Please help your students to learn the words each week. This is a great way to help them become successful readers!
First Grade Skills - phonics and decoding skills, high-frequency words, comprehension skills and strategies, using a dictionary, recognizing sound and letter patterns, understanding word structure, grammar and mechanics, and proofreading skills,
Second Grade Skills - phonics and decoding skills, decoding longer words, high-frequency words, comprehension skills and strategies, using a dictionary and glossary, grammar and mechanics, revision skills, and the writing process.
Something new to the first grade students this year is the Accelerated Reader program. This is where the students read books and take tests in order to show comprehension of what they have read. The books are assigned a point value, which is used to reach a goal that will be set for them each quarter. They will receive a grade on their report cards for this subject.
Math
The mathematics program includes a great deal of hands-on learning, problem solving, real world situations, games, and repetition.

Science and Social Studies
The students will be introduced to both science and social studies concepts this year. We will be working on each subject every other day. I will notify you of the different topics as we begin new chapters. They will also be taking tests to assess their comprehension of these new subjects.
In addition to the textbooks we will be doing a project later in the year involving our great state of Michigan. I will be sending you details when that time arrives.
Jesus Time
Jesus is a major part of our school day. We will begin each day with a prayer and a talk about the blessing He has provided us. We will also be using workbooks to learn about God's love and blessings to those in the Bible, including both the Old and New Testaments. We will be using the workbooks on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday's we have chapel so we will not be working out of our books.
I will also be introducing memorization to the students this year. Each week we will have a short verse that we will talk about and say aloud everyday. On Fridays I will cover the verse and have each child recite it to me. This is a great way to prepare for third grade where memory is a grade.
Music
Mrs. Primeau will be coming in on Wednesday afternoons to do music class. Music is her love, and the students will really enjoy the songs and dances she will be teaching them.
Physical Education
Mrs. Beth Jablonowski, our new fifth and sixth grade teacher, will be coming in to teach P.E. on Friday afternoons. She will be teaching various physical skills through games and exercises.
Computers
Mrs. Shaw is our computer teacher. She will be taking the students into the computer lab on Thursday mornings. They learn many computer skills through the use of games, as well as, keyboarding skills.
Daily Folders and Absences
Students will be using the folders they have brought with them as their daily folders. Each night they will bring home graded homework and papers from that day, along with any notes. The daily folder is to come back to school everyday.
If your child is absent I will put together all of the work they missed. All of their papers and books will be put in the Absent Folder and will either be resting on their desk or given to a sibling at the end of the day. The student has one extra day for every day they were absent to make up the work. Please return the work and the Absent Folder as soon as you are able to.
Friday Folders
I will be providing the students with a Friday folder that has their name on it. Every Friday this folder will come home with any notes or tests from that day/week. Their Weekly Report will also be in their Friday folder every week and is to be signed and returned with the folder on Mondays. The weekly report will be a card that has what color your child ended the day on each day of that week. Please read the Behavior Contract for more information.
Birthdays
You are welcome to send a treat for your child's birthday. Please include enough snacks for 15 students, as well as napkins, plates, etc. if necessary. If your child has a summer birthday I would like to encourage you to celebrate their half birthday (July 10 would celebrate on January 10). This way we are not celebrating multiple birthdays in the last couple of days of school.
Snack Time
Every morning we have a recess from 10:15-10:30. It is also a time when students may eat a snack to hold them over until lunch. I would encourage you to pack something specifically for their snack time, and please do not include candy or sweets, this includes chocolate. I would like to try to teach the importance of healthy foods so please try to send healthy snacks and lunches.
A New Rule . . .
I know in the past years the students have been allowed to bring in their hand-held video games or books related to video games. This year I am not allowing anything associated with video games to come to school. Not even for use at recess. Recess is a great time for the students to run and blow off some steam. It also is a time where they are building their social skills by playing games together. So, please do not allow your child to bring any of these items to school. If they are brought to school they will be taken away and handed back to the parent that is picking them up that day.
Please also refrain from allowing your child to bring small toys, trading cards, or anything else that may result in something getting lost or broken or distracting them from their daily routine. If you have a question about an item, please feel free to ask me about it before it is brought in.
