School Memo Archives

It is amazing to me that I am once again sitting down at my computer to write the final memo article of another school year. For 25 years now, it appears to me that each school year is shorter than the previous one. May God truly bless your family this summer. I pray that you are able to spend time growing closer to one another as a family while at the same time growing in your faith as a member of the Christian family here on earth.

As the principal of St. Lorenz School, I ask myself near the end of every school year a simple question, "Did we keep the main thing, the main thing this year?" As humans, in a fast paced world, we are all in pursuit of many things. Some pursuits are temporary, such as material wealth or public approval, while at other times we choose an intentional pursuit of God's everlasting treasures. Treasures such as the Salvation that He offers through belief in His Son, our Savior.

My prayer is that we, as a school family, were able to focus on and remind one another of what treasures are truly important for us to pursue. I John 2:15 encourages us to be careful of what we pursue in life, "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him." We cannot pursue the temptations of the world as our priority in life while still serving the desires of our God. May our Father in Heaven continue to help parents, students, faculty, and staff in our attempt to place our God as the most important priority in our lives and in our school.

This summer we will be offering August Warm-Up classes in both math and reading for students entering the 2nd through 5th grades next school year. These programs are designed to review and strenghten your student's math and reading skills and provide a "warm up" time before school starts. Lynn Zeddies will be teaching the reading class and Erin Wascher will be teaching the math class. Classes will be held in the mornings on August 6-9 and 13-16 (Monday through Thursday). There will be eight class sessions of each with each session lasting 90 minutes. The cost to sign up for either the reading or math class is $60.00. The teachers have made recommendations and letters have been sent to parents of children who might benefit from these classes. Please make sure to register your child by the June 6 deadline so that plans can be made and supplies purchased. If you did not receive a letter of recommendation but feel your child would benefit from either of these classes, please contact Lynn Zeddies at 652-6141 ext. 211.

Eight teams composed of 5th-8th grade students recently competed in the Academic Bowl. The teams answered questions in the areas of religion, math, language arts, social studies, and science. Also included in the bowl were speed rounds which included general knowledge questions and trivia. Congratulations to the 1st place team: 5th graders Caleb Pendleton and Benjamin Palmreuter, 6th graders Brady Storm and Olivia Maurer, 7th graders Jacob Palmreuter and Hannah Turk, and 8th graders Luke Pendleton and Jonathon Worden. A job well done to all of the students who participated this year. It is a blessing to see students glorify God using their God-given talents!

St. Lorenz Lutheran Church and School would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dave and Chris Van Ooteghem for their assistance in placing the brilliant potted flowers around our church and school buildings. The flowers are gorgeous and lend to the overall beauty of our property. We are grateful to Dave, Chris, and Joanne Ahlschwede for their dedication in providing this service to our congregation.

Thank you for all the Box Tops and Campbell Soup UPC's sent to school this year. The school receives money from the Box Top program that is used by our PE program, and we also submitted Campbell's UPC's to redeem materials for the school as well. Please keep saving them through the summer for next year's collection. THANK YOU!

The following is used with permission from "A Closer Look at the Evidence" by Richard & Tina Kleiss

The piano can produce different-pitched sounds from 88 keys, but the human ear can distinguish over 2,500 different tones! Even more remarkable than the variation in pitch that the human ear can detect is the intensity of sound which the human ear is capable of hearing. The human ear can detect sound frequencies that move the eardrum as slightly as a billionth of an inch. This incredibly small movement is less than the diameter of a hydrogen atom. Our hearing is so sensitive that we can hear the faint sound of blood coursing through our veins when standing in a soundproof room. Over 100,000 hearing receptors in the ears send impulses to our brain to be decoded and interpreted.

Could this marvelously designed instrument of hearing have had no designer?

Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? Psalm 94:9

There is probably not one parent who will read this week's message who has not been guilty of allowing our own personal obligations to interfere with time spent with our families. We sometimes take our families for granted, but God has other plans for our families from the beginning.

God has given us a precious gift through our families. God intends for us to care for our loved ones; part of that means making time for them. We can all list the distractions, temptations, and schedules that make it difficult for families today. The good news for us is that God is greater than any of those challenges. With His help, nothing can separate us from loved ones.

We are all aware that our families are not perfect. Despite all of the mistakes we have made with them, the times that we have hurt them, and the moments we have selfishly placed our own needs in front of theirs, your family is still God's blessing to you. Families are there for one another in times of sorrow and stress, joy and pleasure. Take time daily to thank Him for those special members of your family that, quite frankly, are priceless to Him and should be to us.

You probably noticed a new look to our school memo this week. We are preparing for the 2012-2013 school year. Starting next school year, we will no longer provide printed copies of the school memo. The "St. Lorenz School Newsletter," as it will be called, will be emailed to all parents who provide an email address. The newsletter will also be posted on the St. Lorenz School website as in the past. We hope that you understand the purpose of this change as we make an effort to save on paper and printing costs. For those who still prefer a printed copy, you should be able to select a "printable" version from the email and print to your personal printer. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the new format, we welcome your input.
