Mr. Zeddies’ Class Newsletter
February 5th, 2012
Greetings in Christ!
As I finish typing this newsletter, the Super Bowl has just ended. Of course you know that there is a lot of hype for this sporting event - it’s a BIG DEAL. (Or at least there is a big deal made about it.) Wouldn’t it be nice if every Christian lived their lives - every moment of every day - as though Jesus were the BIGGEST DEAL in their lives?
We’re not quite there yet, but let us strive to continue to make Jesus the most important part of our lives each and every day!
Religion - Our class continues the study of Jesus’ early life and ministry. Emily Grasel is our Mission Friends presenter this week.
Math - On Monday we will use the sizes and prices that the students gathered about their chosen type of food and start figuring the cost per weight of the items in order to find the “best buy”. What we don’t finish in class on Monday is due on Friday, February 17th. (They must show their division for the first four items. They may use a calculator on any more than four that they may have.)
In the meantime, we are continuing with our chapter introducing fractions. There will be a quiz on Thursday covering lessons 1-5 of chapter 5 after I distribute and go over practice sheets for these lessons.
Social Studies - The bookmarks that our class is making for an economics lesson in social studies is progressing this week from the manufacturing stage to the marketing stage. (The class is working very diligently on this project!) Our plan is to have the bookmarks ready to sell on at least two Fridays during the AR Challenge beginning on Friday, February 17th. If there any parents who would care to help us out by overseeing a group for an hour or two at a time in the Learning Center on either February 17th or February 24th, please contact me!
Science - Our current chapter on plate tectonics is rather involved, and there are a number of applications where students watch animations or powerpoint presentations on their computer or make drawings or write vocabulary definitions before answering questions about the earth and its layers. One of the issues with which we are dealing is that in order to gain a thorough understanding of the earth’s layers, students actually have to read information that they find on their computer, not just look at the pictures, drawings, or animations!
This week we are moving from the make-up of the earth’s interior and the tectonic plates and their boundaries to how rocks at the surface of the earth react to stress that are put on them. There will be a test at the end of next week on this chapter, probably on Thursday, February 16th.
Notes:
- DARE bowling will take place on Thursday afternoon at Candelite Bowling Center. Please return the permission slip on Wednesday.
- Please return signed report cards as soon as possible if you have not done so yet.
- There will be no school on Friday, February 10th or Monday, February 13th.
- If students would like to distribute Valentine’s cards on Valentine’s Day they are welcome to do so. However, we do not have a “Valentine’s party” on Tuesday the 14th. If your child would like to bring a treat to share for the 14th, please have them bring me a note indicating what they are planning on bringing.
In Christ,
Mr. Zeddies
