Read-A-Way
Students have been doing a great job filling their “tickets for the Read-A-Way Airlines program and have been excited about reading quality books in the process. Guest Farewell
We will bid farewell to our guest student, Mary Yun, on Friday, February 24. Mary and her brother have been with us since mid-December and will now go back home to South Korea. It has been a privilege, joy, and delight to get to know Mary and to have her as part of our class. We learned much from her, and we pray for God’s blessings on her and her family.
German Class
Please note papers coming home today from German class. Fourth graders have completed a unit on German-speaking countries and cities.
Frau Eyster reminded us that the annual German Service will be on Sunday, March 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
Guest Presentation
Mr. David Auernhamer gave the fourth graders a presentation on animal adaptations. He brought specimens of fur, claws, skulls, etc. for students to examine. Be sure to ask your child about it.
Worship Helpers
In celebration of National Lutheran Schools Week, fourth graders have been asked to greet worshipers and hand out service folders at the worship services on March 3/4. Please see the note coming home today, and have your child consider signing up.
For Your Calendar:
Fourth grade will play recorders at the 5:00 p.m. Lenten service on Wednesday, March 7.
Reading Evaluation
The format of our weekly reading evaluations will change over the next months. Each week a one-page article/story will be sent home to be read aloud to a parent. There are questions that you may help your child answer. Please sign the assignment that will be due each Thursday. We will begin this week with the article: “Columbus and the Arawak Indians.”

Singing on Sunday
Fourth grade will sing at the 9:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday, January 29, at church. Please have your child come to the church basement choir room by 9:10 a.m. to warm up.
Heart Presentation

College Valentines
Fourth and fifth grade students are making valentine cards for members of St. Lorenz who are students in college. The cards will be sent in a church mailing along with a package of treats (and certainly will be gratefully received!). It is another opportunity for our students to share the love of Jesus with others.
Valentine Box
Students are asked to bring a shoebox (or a box of similar size) to school by Friday. The box should be wrapped with tissue paper, wrapping paper, or foil. The lid needs to have a slit cut in the top. If students have extra materials that they would like to use in decorating their box (such as ribbon, stickers or stamps), they may bring these also by Friday.

End of Semester
“Time flies when you are having fun.” On Friday, January 20, we will reach the mid-point of this school year—already! Students will receive their second quarter report cards on Friday, January 27.
Note from Frau Eyster:
“In 4th grade German class we have just completed a unit on animals. The vocabulary is split between cognates (words that are spelled the same or nearly the same in each language) and animal names that are very different. The students did very well on this unit, and grades are available online and in their paper packet being sent home this week.”

A blessed 2012 to all! We are grateful for holiday and vacation days, and, hopefully, are rested and ready to begin the New Year. Please know that the winter months ahead are heavy months of learning. Please keep our class in your prayers as we continue to grow in faith and in knowledge.
Family Devotion Backpack
Sometime during the year, look for your child to bring home a back-pack full of devotional items
(books, videos, CD’s) for family use. Students will take turns bringing home the backpack on Fridays and are asked to send it back to school on the following Thursday. There are some wonderful materials available for spiritual growth for children and their families, and it is hoped that your household will enjoy them.

Please note the information coming home today regarding a “Writing Workshop” to be held after school on Thursdays and the annual “Young Authors’ Conference” to be held at our school in March. These enrichment opportunities are open to any interested students.

St. Lorenz Concert
Fourth graders were asked to sing a German carol with the adult choirs at the St. Lorenz Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 11, at 1:30 p.m. Last week a note was sent home to the fourth graders who volunteered to take part. In order for us to prepare, please return the attached form regarding the services. Thank you for your support.
Recorders
Fourth graders received their recorders and books last week. The children should leave their recorders and books in their backpacks at all times unless they are being used in music class or at home practice. As we continue to work on personal responsibility, students will learn that their music grade will be affected if they forget their recorder or music book at home or if they fail to practice at the appropriate times. Please be patient with the sound. Your musician will improve!
Christmas Party
We are looking forward to our classroom Christmas party on Thursday, December 22. Students may bring a gift for the gift exchange that week. Girls should bring a gift (suggested amount to spend: about $5.00) for a girl, and boys should bring a gift for a boy.
AR Points
It is good to see students reading much more this quarter, as they are accumulating accelerated reader points. A reminder: fourth graders should have 5 AR points by Friday, Dec. 9. By mid-January, they are required to have 10 AR points for this quarter.
Reading Evaluation
Please listen to your child read a chapter of choice from the accelerated reader book that s/he is reading.
