As we prepare to say "good-bye" to Karl and Kendra Fay, we thank them for their ministry among us this past year. Please plan to attend a farewell open house at the Ahlschwede residence the evening of August 10th.
We also thank our St. Lorenz Foundation for its continued support of this program that is such an important part of the training for future pastors in the church. To date, all expenses associated with the vicarage program have been covered by our Foundation. Without that support, it would be extremely doubtful that we could have continued our involvement, which is now going into its fifth year.
We look forward to welcoming John and Niccy Walla, who will be arriving around August 13th.
One of the components of the parking lot project this summer will be to replace some of our existing sidewalks. Included in the original plans for the new sidewalks was to be a snow-melt system of pipes buried in the cement.
"With a budget as large as St. Lorenz has, what possible difference can my offering make?"
"Can’t we have the St. Lorenz Foundation pay most of our expenses?"
"It seems as if St. Lorenz is always ‘running in the red’ with our Operating Fund. Why is it, then, that we always seem to have money for ‘luxury’ items like electronic sign boards, new buildings in the Churchgrove and video monitors in the church?"
“Who determines how Operating Fund monies are spent?”
- Personnel Costs
- Utilities and Insurance
- Program Expenses
Of the 300 votes cast in last weekend’s referendum, 265 of them (88%) were in favor of proceeding with the proposed parking lot re-surfacing.

It’s Okay to be Human . . . An important theme of the Lenten season is the humanity of Christ. In Jesus, God became human and fully experienced the wide range of emotions we all encounter in life. Jesus experienced times of loneliness, sadness, hurt, anger, disappointment, grief, and abandonment. That is part of being human. Another part of being human is needing help from each other. God never intended us to be completely self-sufficient. Part of God’s plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it.

Q: "Would it be possible to use less paper for our worship services?"
A: Yes, it would. In fact, we have already done so to some degree as we have discontinued the practice of printing out the words to the hymnal liturgies at our traditional services. That no longer is necessary, since we can display the words on our video monitors. At the same time, we recognize that there are limitations to what we can do with those monitors. While quite large, they are not of sufficient size to be able to handle print size large enough to easily be viewed by all our worshipers. For that reason, we are hesitant to rely solely on those monitors.
In the coming weeks, we will be exploring ways at both our traditional and contemporary services to further reduce paper usage.
As good a goal as reducing paper usage is, it is not the most important thing. Our top priority is to conduct worship services that glorify God and edify His people. Printed materials can be an important component.

Sometimes Valentine’s Day Isn’t Happy For some people, Valentine’s Day is a painful reminder of a broken relationship, the death of a loved one, a recent relocation, a chronic illness, or another life challenge. If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring Jesus’ love (God’s “ultimate Valentine”) back into your life. Stephen Ministers provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, support, encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your struggle.

This coming week the Stephen Series training class at St. Lorenz will be considering the subject of “Crisis Theory and Intervention: Danger vs. Opportunity”. In this presentation they will be studying what happens when a person goes through a crisis, and how caring Christian ministry can help turn a potential danger into an opportunity for growth.
Are You Experiencing a “Winter” in Your Life? In addition to the cold weather outside, many people experience “winters” in their personal lives. A recent loss through death, divorce, or relocation may leave them feeling lonely. A hospitalization, cancer diagnosis, or ongoing medical problems may leave them feeling isolated. The loss of a job, the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback can devastate one’s self-esteem. Family and personal struggles may leave them with nowhere to turn for support.
If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring God’s warm love back into your life. They provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, support, and encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your crisis.

“Christ Caring for People through People” is the motto of Stephen Ministry. The Stephen Minister’s role is to bring God’s love into the lives of people who are going through a difficult time or experiencing a crisis. What do Stephen Ministers do? They listen to you, care for you, support and encourage you, and pray with and for you. And in the midst of this confidential, one-to-one caring relationship, God’s healing love comes pouring through.

Q: "Why don’t we use the King James Version Bible in worship anymore?"
A: First published in 1611 after seven years of work by a committee of 47 scholars, this translation is named for the king of England who had commissioned it. It was almost universally used in homes and churches for over 300 years. During the 20th century, many new translations of the Bible were produced. At the present time there are more than 500 translations in the English language alone.
In spite of its beautiful use of the English language and the flowing sentence structure it employs, the King James is not the translation of choice for reading in many churches today. More often used are the New International Version (NIV) or the English Standard Version (ESV). They have replaced the KJV primarily because many of the words used in 1611 have either changed in meaning or are otherwise not easily understood today. While efforts have been made to update the KJV (most notably the New King James Version), none of them have met with widespread approval.

Q: "Why do we stand up before the sermon and again at its conclusion?"
A: I don’t know for sure, but I’ll answer anyway . The sermon is the part of the service that devotes the most amount of time and attention to an explanation of a portion of God’s Word. Standing right before and after the sermon can be a sign of respect for the Word expounded on in the sermon. Or, it can just be a custom that nobody knows why we do.
This question is a reminder of why it can be a good idea to periodically review worship practices. At some time in the future we intend to conduct such a review of our services to try to determine which practices seem out of date and should be changed or eliminated. Could be an interesting study.
GIFTS - by Deb Hollenback
Q: "On the Last Sunday of the church year, we read the names of those who have died only in the 9:30 service. Why not do that in all of them?"
A: That used to be our practice. We changed at the request of family members who said it was too painful for them to hear their loved-one’s name read in church, so they didn’t come that weekend. Our current practice is to inform close family members that their loved one will be remembered by name at the 9:30 service that Sunday. We list the names in the service folder so that worshipers at the other services can also remember them in their own prayers.
Q: "Is it possible to increase the lighting in the church?"
A: We did that about 7 years ago by replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs are more energy efficient and significantly brighter than the ones they replaced. However, they have grown dimmer with age and some have burned out. They are all scheduled for replacement in January. There is not enough physical space in the lighting channels to go to a larger bulb to achieve greater brightness. In addition, the indirect lighting that is used in the church also limits our options.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY! St. Lorenz needs men and women of our congregation who are willing to answer Jesus’ call to serve as Stephen Ministers, which begins with 50 hours of stimulating and useful training in Christian care giving skills. While being a Stephen Minister requires commitment of time and effort, it also brings joy and fulfillment. It may be one of the most rewarding challenges you will ever embrace.
Jesus set a perfect example of looking after others who are hurting or need help. He also showed his disciples about caring and supporting for each other, praying together and learning about God. ChristCare Small Group Ministry strives to do the same by encouraging, equipping and living out the scriptures. Anybody can know God’s Word, but a disciple lives it out.
Me a Stephen Minister? The Stephen Series, a program for enabling people to do caring ministry, will begin training lay ministers soon. Is this for you? Do you care about people? Do you have a desire to pass on to others the love that God has shown to you? Do you want to learn to know yourself better? If you answered YES to these questions, then the Stephen Series is for you. A training class for Stephen Ministers is beginning January, 2009.
ChristCare Small Group Ministry is people praying together, growing in God’s Word, providing mutual support, and reaching out to others. Wherever you are on your faith journey, ChristCare will help you stretch and grow.

“I Can’t Be a Stephen Minister!” Anytime some new challenge shows up, the “I can’t” phrase is bound to be nearby. You may have heard about Stephen Ministry, realized that you do have the gifts, the commitment, and the desire necessary to be a Stephen Minister, and you even may have felt God’s tap on your shoulder. But you still aren’t sure. Give prayerful consideration to joining the training session beginning January, 2009. Countless times Stephen Ministers have said something like, “I signed up as a Stephen Minister to serve others, but what I have found is that I have received much more from my care receiver, my fellow Stephen Ministers, my Stephen Leaders, and my growing relationship with God than I ever put into this ministry.”
Caring, Committed People Needed! Have you ever wanted to be intimately involved in a ministry of your own, but just did not know how, or where, or with whom? Saint Lorenz Stephen Ministry has plans to begin in January, 2009 training of Stephen Ministers to do just such a caring ministry. The Stephen Ministry series is a complete system for training and organizing lay persons to give distinctively Christian care to people who need it, both in the congregation and in the community. Here is your opportunity to be part of a special ministry.
The following individuals with a Prayer Pager have requested your prayers.

Did you realize...that the average crisis lasts for about six weeks? By th end of a month and a half, people usually come to some solution. Sometimes the solutions are good. But sometimes they just cause more painful problems. Stephen Ministry can help people find a positive resolution to crises.

Invisible. Sometimes we feel like this - as if no one sees us or cares about us. We feel lonely, forgotten. When you feel like this, a Stephen Minister can give you the caring Christian concern and listening you need.
Did you know... that after the loss of a loved one, it often takes two full years to recover from grief? And the first year can be all downhill. Stephen Ministers are trained and willing to care for others through this time of great loss.
When your world turns upside down... a Stephen Minister can be there with you.
Divorce, death, losing a job... all of these are crises that can be overwhelming. A Stephen Minister is ready and willing to care for you or a friend during difficult times like these.
Summertime Stress Slowing You Down? We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises, and problems don't take a vacation. Many times our difficulties seem even worse during the summer because everyone else seems to be enjoying life while you are feeling down. If you are experiencing a difficult time - emotionally, spiritually or relationally - you don't have to suffer alone. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers, ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. Men are matched with male Stephen Ministers and women are matched with female Stephen Ministers. It's free. It's confidential. And it will make a difference in your life!

Decisions. What should I do with my life? What does God want me to do? How can I know? A Stephen Minister can serve as a listening ear while you explore these questions.
Just as a Mother cares for her children by listening and being there for them in times of stress, so do Stephen Ministers provide care. If one allows them to come, a Stephen Minister can be there for those individuals experiencing stress or any tribulations in their lives.
The world has shrunk to a single room. You don't get out much - your condition won't allow it. there aren't too many visitors anymore. A Stephen Minister would like to visit, listen, share your pain, and help you discover new ways to cope.
"Why don't you try this?" When you're going through tough times, the advice flies thick and fast. But often it isn't advice you need - it's caring. Stephen Ministers are trained to give this care by listening instead of pushing advice.
What a great small group! Do you remember a great small group that you were a part of? Maybe you currently are in one. Help others to benefit from the same experience by training as a ChristCare Leader.
